Nintendo is currently developing a new Mario Kart game, according to an industry analyst.
In fact, it is said that House of Mario will introduce the game at some point this year.
That’s according to Dr. Serkan Toto from the Japanese industry-focused consulting firm Kantan Games.
Talk to GI.bizDr. Toto said that although Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still selling well, Mario Kart 9 is in “active development” and “comes with a new turning point”.
Considering Mario Kart 8 first launched on the Wii U in 2014, a new title in the series in development shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise – nor should a “new twist” shock you. Finally, Mario Kart 8 introduced an anti-gravity feature, allowing players to drive along walls and ceilings. It also adds the ability to collide with each other for a short period of time.
The best-selling Wii U game was later enhanced for the Switch and released as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe back in 2017 with an expanded Battle mode. It was also a success, becoming the Switch’s best-selling game. Both versions sold more than 47 million copies in total worldwide, making it the best-selling racing game and one of the best-selling video games of all time.
Nintendo has always kept things private and doesn’t respond to rumors or speculation, preferring instead to announce titles when it’s ready. It does love teasing, though, so perhaps sometime around E3, we might hear something about it. Or, the company could completely surprise us and take this news out of the Nintendo Direct sometime this year.
