Mariupol mosque sheltering 80 people was shelled by Russian troops, Ukraine says – POLITICO

Russian forces attacking the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol shelled a mosque that housed more than 80 adults and children, Ukraine’s foreign ministry said on Saturday.

Ministry said in a tweet.

“More than 80 adults and children are hiding there from the shelling, including citizens of Turkey.”

The ministry did not mention any casualties or say when the shelling took place.

Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Emine Dzheppar tweeted late on Friday that “at this very moment, [Russian] the army is bombing the ‘mosque.

The besieged city of Mariupol was one of the hardest hit by Russian attacks. Russian forces bombed a maternity hospital there, injuring several people and killing three people, including a child, according to Ukrainian authorities.

“The besieged Mariupol is currently the worst humanitarian disaster on the planet,” said Ukraine Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba speak Friday in a tweet allegedly showing a mass grave in the city.

“1582 civilians died in 12 days, even buried in mass graves like this.”

On Friday, Ukraine’s foreign ministry speak that the Russian military has kidnapped Mayor of Melitopol, Ivan Fedorov, “sceptically accusing the Mayor of being ‘terrorist’,” it said.
