Russia claims it has taken the port in the heavily besieged city of Mariupol after showing footage of more than 1,000 Ukrainian marines surrendering.

Mariupol was devastated by the Russian shelling, leaving the city in ruins and there was evidence of war crimes being committed, with hospitals and train stations among the buildings hit.

Ukrainians have vowed to keep fighting in Mariupol as food and water run out in a city of strong strategic interest to Russia.

It has been under a heavy siege since the invasion began on February 24, and Russia now claims to have taken the city’s port with Ukrainian fighters running out of ammunition.

But the Ukrainian government has so far denied that the port of Mariupol fell.

Russian state television has apparently shown Ukrainian soldiers surrendering at a steel mill and walking around with their hands raised.

Russia’s Defense Ministry on Wednesday said 1,026 soldiers from Ukraine’s 36th Naval Brigade, including 162 officers, had surrendered in Mariupol, which has been under siege for weeks, and that the port is completely under its control.

Capture of the Azovstal industrial zone where the Marines are hiding would give the Russians full control of Ukraine’s main Azov Sea port, strengthen a southern land corridor and expand occupation of the east of the country.

Ukraine’s General Staff said Russian troops would attack Azovstal and the port, but a Defense Ministry spokesman said he had no information about a surrender.

“Russian forces are stepping up activities on the southern and eastern fronts and trying to avenge their defeats,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a video address on Wednesday evening.

Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, an ardent supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin, called on Ukrainians trapped in Azovstal to surrender.

“There are currently about 200 wounded in Azovstal who cannot receive medical assistance,” Kadyrov said in a Telegram post. “It would be better for them and everyone else to end this pointless resistance and go home to their families.”

Ukraine says tens of thousands of people are believed to have been killed in Mariupol and accuses Russia of blocking aid convoys to civilians stranded there.

Its mayor, Vadym Boichenko, said Russia used mobile crematoria “to get rid of evidence of war crimes.”

Moscow has blamed Ukraine for the deaths of civilians and accused Kyiv of denigrating Russian forces.
