Martin Clunes made a cryptic comment about the decision to end the hit ITV TV series Doc Martin, as filming began in Cornwall in its final season.
Martin, 60, has won hearts and minds as a tough doctor in the idyllic village of Portwenn with a fear of gore.
This week, the series began filming eight new episodes of the hit TV series, with a special Christmas break to say goodbye to Doc Martin one last time.
Martin confirmed in 2020 that he will hang up his stethoscope and bow to the tenth series of the ITV show and he has now commented on the decision.
He said he always looks forward to returning to Cornwall to shoot the series and points to the people of Port Isaac for their help in making ITV’s huge success.

“We have some great storylines for the new series and especially for Christmas, which I hope Doc Martin fans will love,” he said.
He then added cryptically: “I will miss Cornwall, and all the lovely people we worked with. But now is the right time to say goodbye to Doc, and Portwenn. ”
ITV’s head of drama Polly Hill also commented on the show’s finale, promising fans Doc Martin to have a good time before thanking the cast and crew for their efforts. them in creating the “special” series.
She said: “If this really has to be Doc Martin’s last series, we think we’ll be hosting a Christmas special too!

“It will be sad to see the series end after entertaining audiences on ITV for the past 18 years, but we will ensure that the finale is memorable and befitting of such a success story.”
ITV fans have been fascinated by the general’s life and his not-so-smooth love affairs, and eventual marriage to Louisa Ellingham, played by Caroline Catz.
The final season of the series saw Doc decide to step down as Portwenn’s doctor after his medical career came under scrutiny by the General Medical Council because of his hemophobia.
In the final series, fans will see Doc try to overcome his obsession and begin to question whether he made the right decision in resigning.

He and Louisa also welcomed a young daughter, Mary Elizabeth, sister of four-year-old James Henry.
With Louisa pursuing a new career as a pediatric consultant on top of his old surgery, Doc must care for their newborn and satisfy his hobby of repairing clocks on the kitchen table.
Also returning for the finale was Dame Eileen Atkins, who played Doc Martin’s formidable Aunt Ruth. Ian McNeice returns to play Bert Large, with Joe Absolom as his son Al. John Marquez is PC Joe Penhale, Jessica Ransom is Doctor Morwenna Newcross’s receptionist and Selina Cadell is pharmacist Mrs Tishell.
The series will also finally come with an interim ITV documentary titled Doc Martin – A Celebration, which will highlight Doc Martin’s longevity and impact over the years, as well as give audiences a glimpse Go behind the scenes of the final series with the crew.
