Martin Compston worries people will find him ‘nasty’ in new road trip series

Martin Compston is worried viewers will find him “nasty” in a new six-part series about his trip around Scotland with presenter Phil MacHugh.

Compston’s Scottish Fling had its premiere at Greenock’s Waterfront Theater – a venue specifically requested by Compston as a nod to his hometown.

The six-part series takes Compston and MacHugh from Greenock on the west coast of Scotland, where Compston lives, on a six-week adventure.

Compston has shared his worries about the opposite of appearing as himself on television, having spent his entire career acting in roles like Steve Arnott on Line Of Duty.

“It’s pretty intense because you have characters to hide behind.

“I’m like, ‘Sometimes I’m a bit too much, am I too focused on it, or am I going to annoy people?” he says.

He joked: “That’s the thing about doing it with your friend: we can split the annoyance between us.”

The Sweet Sixteen star said the show will offer “escapism” to viewers “this week of all weeks” after Liz Truss was elected prime minister on Monday.

Compston has previously voiced support for Scottish independence.

He felt it was important for the journey that began and ended in Greenock to present the town as a “hidden gem”.

“I’m so proud to come from here, it’s an important part of my identity,” he said.

“The fact that we can keep bringing things back here is a real joy.

“I like it here, so the more I can show it off, the better.”

For MacHugh, it was important for the pair to get a “full story” of what Scotland has to offer.

“People don’t really get a chance to see places like Greenock,” he said.

“And when they do, they’re like, ‘Oh, my God. It’s so beautiful’.

“I think it is important for both of us to get a full story of what Scotland has to offer.

“It’s a very vibrant, exciting country again, and I think sometimes we forget that.”

Scotland’s east coast proved to be one of MacHugh’s highlights, while witnessing where he grew up on the Western Isles is one of Compston’s best parts.

“There was a family gathering downstairs and all of a sudden Phil was back on the quad bike like Action Man,” Compston said.

MacHugh said bringing Compston back to where he grew up was “quite special”.

Both MacHugh and Compston say they’ve championed Scotland throughout their adult lives, and the series offers an opportunity to take it one step further.

Compston said it tried to offer something different from some of the travel shows, which showcased “a bit silly” places.

He said: “I can’t speak for other travel shows but absolutely no malice.

“We are really happy to be wherever we are and try to show all we can.

“I think we’ve found some really niche little gems and hopefully they’ll get there when the show comes out.”

The first episode airs at 10pm on Thursday 8 September on BBC Scotland.
