Martin Lewis discusses marriage tax allowance in 2021

A fan of money-saving expert Martin Lewis received a check for £800 in the post after hearing advice on how to reduce the cost of living and simply calling.

On last week’s episode of ITV’s Martin Lewis Money Show, the financial expert gave viewers tips on how best to navigate the cost of living crisis, reports Manchester Evening News.

During the episode of the show, he explains to viewers how they can get cash by taking advantage of the marriage tax allowance.

Martin explains that the marriage tax allowance allows you to transfer £1,260 of your personal allowance (the amount you can earn tax-free each year) to your spouse or civil partner, if they earn be more than you.

One viewer investigated whether she could benefit from this advice and made a phone call, which resulted in her receiving a £800 payout.

She tweeted to Martin: “After watching your show last night about marriage benefits I called today and the £800 check was in the post… thank you for everything you do, we’re so lucky to have someone like you.”

What is the marriage allowance?

The Marriage Allowance allows you to transfer £1,260 of your personal allowance (the amount you can earn tax-free each year) to your spouse or civil partner, if they earn more than you.

If your claim is successful, it will lower the higher earner’s tax bill for the tax year, but you can also delay your claim if you qualify. Only people with specific circumstances can apply, WalesOnline.

You need to be married or in a civil partnership, not just living together. One in two needs to be a non-taxpayer, which usually means you’ll earn less than £12,570 in personal allowance between 6 April 2021 and 5 April 2022.

The other partner must be a taxpayer at the basic 20% rate, and both of you must be born on or after April 6, 1935.
