An easyJet customer has explained how he reclaimed £440 from the airline after his flights were cancelled.

If your flight has been canceled you may be entitled to compensation from the airline – this is on top of a new flight.

It all depends on when your flight was cancelled, how long your trip was disrupted and how far your trip is.

The flyer, known only as Helen, shared her flight compensation experience with Martin Lewis’ MoneySavingExpert website.

She said it only took five minutes to fill out the form she needed to claim her money.

Helen said: “I received £440 in compensation for canceled Easyjet flights using your tool and it only took five minutes to fill in the form. Thank you Martin.”

Tens of thousands of passengers were affected by airport cancellations and delays in May and June.

There are fears that the summer holidays will be affected due to the airport suspension.

The problem has been linked to the shedding of thousands of travel industry jobs during the pandemic, as well as increased demand for holidays after restrictions were lifted.

If your vacation has been interrupted, here’s what you need to know…

Compensation for canceled flights

Your original flight must be canceled by the airline within 14 days of your scheduled departure to be eligible for compensation.

The time difference between the alternative flight and the original booking and the length of your journey will then be taken into account to determine any monetary liability.

Here’s how it breaks down, with the hours referring to the time difference of your alternate flight from your original booking.

For flights canceled 7 to 14 days before departure:

  • Flight length 0 to 1,500 km – Departing two or more hours before, landing up to two hours after – €125 (£110)
  • Flight length 0 to 1,500 km – Arriving 4 hours or more late or departing 2 hours or more before, landing 2 hours or more late – €250 (£220)
  • Flight length 1,500km to 3,000km – Departs at least two hours before, landing up to three hours after – €200 (£170)

  • Flight length 1,500km to 3,000km – arrive four or more hours late or depart two or more hours before, landing three to four hours later – €400 (£350)

  • Flight length 3,500km or more – Departs two or more hours before, arrives up to four hours late – €300 (£260)

  • Flight length 3,500km and over – Arrive four or more hours late – €600 (£520)

For flights canceled less than 7 days before departure:

  • Flight length 0 to 1,500km – Departs one or more hours before, arrives up to two hours after – €125 (£110)
  • Flight length 0 to 1,500km – Arrive two or more hours late – €250 (£220)
  • Flight length 1,500km to 3,000km – Departs one or more hours before, landing up to three hours after – €200 (£170)

  • Flight length 1,500km to 3,000km – Arrival three or more hours late – €400 (£350)

  • Flight length 3,500km or more – Departs one or more hours before, landing up to four hours after – €300 (£260)

  • Flight length 3,500km and over – Arrive four or more hours late – €600 (£520)

Compensation is only awarded to EU/UK airlines and it must be the airline’s fault that the flight could not operate.

You should contact the airline directly if you think you are entitled to compensation. MoneySavingExpert also has a free online claim form that you can use.

If you are not satisfied with the airline’s response, you can escalate your complaint to the Civil Aviation Authority.
