Martin Lewis fans have shared tips on how struggling families can cut family meal costs.

Martin Lewis and his Money Saving Expert (MSE) team asked social media followers for their top tips to help people struggling with the cost of living crisis.

The team put together the Cost of Living Survival Guide to help Brits weather the price hikes. Hull Live reports.

Families are expected to feel the sting this month as utility bills and Social Security increases.

Council taxes, fuel prices and groceries are also rising, causing more people to feel the hardship.

Presenting his team’s tips, Martin Lewis wrote: “Unfortunately for some there is no way to reduce spending below income; this solution requires political intervention.

“For others, we need a collective effort to work together to relieve financial pressures where we can. And that is partly behind this guide.”

He explained the team had received thousands of replies from people with clever ideas on how to cut household spending.

Martin described the response – which garnered more than 2,200 replies to his tweet alone – as “overwhelming and uplifting.”

One of the tips was to invest in a slow cooker to make meals for the whole family. They are available from Asda for just £12.

The Money Saving Expert team said batch cooking creates less food waste and reduces the likelihood of spending extra money on takeaways.

One follower said they are “saving a fortune” by using theirs more and more.

Sharron Quaile wrote: “A chef recently told us on TV that we should all get a slow cooker as it costs 23p to cook a meal overnight. Made a chili crisp the other day and gave my neighbor a portion (she lives alone) and there’s a portion in the freezer.”

One user going by the name Living in Hope wrote: “I’m using my slow cooker more and more these days to make delicious soups, curries, stews, etc., and then freeze them in recycled take-out containers. That saves a fortune overall.”

They added that the investment didn’t cost much. “It’s standard size, only cost me about £20 – very basic, no whistles or bells but does the job,” they wrote.

The MSE guide also says that using a microwave is generally cheaper than an oven. It is said that a jacket potato is more than 25 percent cheaper to cook in the microwave than in the oven.
