Martin Lewis has issued a £400 warning to anyone who pays their energy bills a certain way.
Hundreds of thousands of households have failed to redeem vouchers that will take £400 off their energy bills this winter, raising concerns some could miss out on vital government support.
According to PayPoint, just over half (53%) of the 800,000 coupons issued have been redeemed to date.
This means households are missing out on around £27million in support that would be paid by the government so far.
Under the government scheme announced in May, households will have between £66 and £67 deducted from their energy bills each month between October and April.
For households that pay by direct debit or have intelligent prepaid meters, this money is automatically debited.
But millions of homes depend on legacy prepaid meters — and those people are instead being mailed a voucher to redeem at a store.
Warning from Martin Lewis to people with prepayment meters
Money Saving Expert Founder Martin Lewis shared a warning on social media. He wrote: “Are you on a NON-SMART PREPAYMENT energy meter? If so, there are reports today that many people have yet to claim their £66/month Winter Energy Relief vouchers. If you are in that position you have applied for it, if no why not (perhaps not yet charged after being precharged?)”.

Adam Scorer, chief executive of charity National Energy Action, said: “One of the least surprising findings of the Energy Bills Support Scheme is that people with older prepayment meters are most likely missing out.
“They may not know the system exists, hesitate to open letters from suppliers, miss the email or be unable to print the voucher.
“Obviously having the support on the ground is crucial. It’s just as important to make sure people can and do access it.
“The UK Government needs to learn this lesson for anything after the Energy Price Guarantee.”
