If it’s been a while since your last trip and you’re not sure if your documents are still valid, it’s important to check them well in advance of the summer break.

Check the expiration date on your passport

First check how long your passport is still valid before it expires.

said Martin Lewis his latest newsletter: “Check if your passport has less than 6 months left or is over 10 years old when you go.

“Brexit means more countries are now requiring British passports that have months left and are under 10 years old to let you in.”

The new rules were introduced after the UK left the EU in terms of how mall months are required to be on the pass to be able to travel.

Brits used to only need a valid passport to travel to countries across Europe, but New rules are now available.

The government website confirms that Brits must have at least three months left on their passport to travel to an EU country, saying it must be “valid for at least 3 months after the date you are due to travel (check that). ,Expiry Date’). Date’)”.

How much time do you need for your passport? depends on the country you are visitingso check those of the government travel tips for the country you want to travel to.

Allow enough time to renew the pass

Secondly, allow enough time to renew your passport as waiting times are currently double the usual.

Martin Lewis said: “If you need to renew, go quickly as the UK Passport Office is overloaded and understaffed.

“It says to give ‘up to 10 weeks’ to get a pass, but I’m hearing it’s taking longer for some and paying for ‘fast track’ isn’t an option for many as it is there are only a few appointments.”

4.5 million Britons will see their travel documents expire before July 18, 2022, the week when many schools in England and Wales begin to separate for the summer.

Anyone planning a break abroad must apply for an extension to May 9th if you want it in time for the start of the summer holidays.

Check the expiration date of your EHIC / GHIC

If your passport is in order, it is also important to check yours GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) or EHIC (European Health Insurance Card), which gives you access to healthcare across the EU at the same prices as a local.

The GHIC has replaced the old European health insurance cards, although your EHIC will remain valid if it is within its expiry date.

According to Martin Lewis, 5.6 million GHIC or EHIC cards will expire this year.

He said: “If you have an old-school European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), check that it is still valid. If not, most must now apply for their post-Brexit replacement, the FREE Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC).”

Note that your EHIC or GHIC is not a substitute for travel insurance as it may not cover all medical expenses and will never cover repatriation expenses.
