Martin Lewis has called on the government to help people amid the cost of living crisis – when they are forced to choose between starving or freezing to death due to soaring prices.
The money-savings expert admits the country is in the “worst position” he has seen in more than two decades, as he pleads with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and the broader government to step in and help people grow. energy, gasoline and more.
Martin appeared on Good Morning Britain today, where he warned of divisions for many in the UK if the government does not quickly come up with a plan to help and support those who are struggling the most during the crisis. this cost of living crisis.
Speaking to co-host Susanna Reid, he said: “Where we are right now, we’re in the worst position I’ve seen since I started being a Money Saver in. 2000 for everyone’s pocket We have to be very careful not to put all of that on Ukraine’s doorstep because it’s all not Ukraine’s fault – much of it was there before we got here.
“We have to be careful that there isn’t a narrative that terrible things are happening in Ukraine, we have to suck it up because of what’s there. Because it’s not all about that. I think we have to attract a little bit, but no less, I think, the Prime Minister has to give up the idea of being a lower tax Prime Minister because this is not the time.”
He added: “And with energy bills tending to rise by £1300 in a year, that is absolutely what is nailing this more than anything else, people are going to need help or they will had to choose between starving or freezing to death.”
Martin admitted he was “almost out of tools” when he called on the government to step in to avoid a widespread disaster.
“When I say I barely run out of tools – in the old days I would say you’re paying too much, you’re on the capped price, you need to switch and here’s how to save. None of the fixes available on the open market are worth participating in,” he explained.
“Most people have cut back on their usage, most people have insulated their homes as much as they can.”
He added: “All the usual tricks, all the usual tools are gone, so we have to look at the government and say you need to bring the price down, especially for those poorest and rising for some in the middle, and while they can afford the increase in the cost of living – as they can afford it – everything else in their lives would have to go, so that’s a big drop in living standards.
“That’s where we are today and it’s very scary.”
