Sky Sports commentator Martin Tyler has insisted Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is wrong in his assessment that everyone in the country is a Liverpool fan.
The three-time Premier League winner made the bold claim when speaking about how differently people perceive the two teams battling for the title at the top of the table. “Everyone in this country supports Liverpool, the media and everyone,” the city boss told beIN Sports.
He followed the comment with a not-so-subtle take on Liverpool’s internal struggles ahead of Jurgen Klopp. “Obviously because Liverpool have an incredible history in European competition,” added Guardiola. “Not in the Premier League because they’ve won one in 30 years but that’s not a problem at all.”
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher made the claim while covering the Reds’ trip to Southampton alongside Tyler. When the commentator was reminded that Guardiola mentioned that he believes everyone is a Liverpool fan, Tyler replied: “Yes he has and I would like to reach out to him on that.
“The only time I can think of the whole country wanting one team to win was Leicester (in the 2015-16 season). We’re supporting the outsiders here, you can’t call Manchester City or Liverpool outsiders.”
Klopp also responded to Guardiola’s comments at the time, claiming the City boss spoke in the heat of the moment. “I live in Liverpool so yes, a lot of people want us to win the league here, that’s true, but even here it’s probably only 50 per cent,” added the German, referring to Merseyside rivals Everton.

“I have no idea if the whole country is supporting us, it’s not the feeling I get when we go places, it’s actually the opposite. Maybe he knows more about it than I do.” Klopp could barely hide his grin as he responded to Guardiola’s statement.
While Liverpool recorded an important 2-1 win at St Mary’s, Guardiola’s men, with a one-point lead before the final day of the Premier League season, are still expected to win a fourth league title in five seasons. It’s exactly the same momentum as on the final day of the season three years ago when City had 90 points to Liverpool’s 89 with one game to go.
It means the title race will last until the final day, with Liverpool taking on Wolves at home while City welcome an Aston Villa side led by Reds icon Steven Gerrard to the Etihad as the Villa boss tries to do his former team the ultimate favor .
