A mass evacuation is underway after a volcano erupted with “fast-moving streams of gas, ash and debris” in the Philippines this morning.

Huge plumes of ash have risen from the Taal volcano and the region has been put on high alert.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the clouds rose up to 1,500 meters into the sky.

It said there should be evacuations because of “hot, fast-moving streams of gas, ash, and debris”.

The institute also said future eruptions could result in a tsunami.

A level three alert has been issued for ‘magmatic intrusion’, meaning there is a possibility of further eruptions.

“With Taal on Alert Level 3, Phivolcs strongly recommended evacuating the Taal Volcanic Island and the Bilibinwang and Banyaga barangays in the town of Agoncillo in Batangas, and the Gulod and East Bugaan East barangays in the town of Laurel in Batangas,” it said.

“At 07:22 PST, the main crater of Taal Volcano produced a short-lived phreatomagmatic eruption, followed by near-continuous phreatomagmatic activity that generated 1,500 meter (high) plumes accompanied by volcanic earthquakes and infrasound signals.”

The area around the Taal volcanic island has been designated as a danger zone and “entering and the high-risk barangays of Agoncillo and Laurel must be prohibited”.

All activities on Lake Taal are prohibited while planes are instructed to avoid the area.

“Communities around the shores of Lake Taal are being advised to remain vigilant, take precautions against possible airborne ash… and calmly prepare for possible evacuation should unrest intensify,” Phivolcs said.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said in a statement Saturday that its regional counterpart is monitoring the situation and planning for the evacuation.

The latest eruption of Taal Volcano has displaced thousands of people and hit businesses hard, particularly in Batangas and the nearby resort of Tagaytay City, it said.
