A former surfing champion has shared the moment his nephew survived a shark attack as the predators massed beaches in Australia.

Beachgoers have been warned of giant sharks chasing swimmers off Frenchman’s Beach amid news of the horrific attack.

The annual whale migration began last weekend near the famous beach in Queensland, Australia.

Recalling his nephew’s experience, Russell Specht of Stradbroke Island urged tourists to be aware of the hidden dangers when thousands of humpback whales migrate to the east coast.

He said his lifeguard nephew Logan was “really close” while surfing and posted an aerial photo of the killer shark.

In an Instagram post, the uncle said: “He had to put the board between himself and a tall white man… he thought it was over. I had to post something as too many tourists just have no idea.

“So many crew locals and tourists have no idea [amount of] Whites following the whales and schools of mullets up and down [the] coast at this time of year.”

Russell’s warning came after a giant white shark threatened surfers at Frenchman’s Beach over the weekend.

He recalled “the carnage” of another episode, when a shark bit off his friend’s leg, and another spot on North Stradbroke Island where another surfer was attacked by a shark.

Whales travel to warmer waters along the east coast of Australia between June and August each year to mate.

This brings a large number of dangerous sharks to the area.

In March, drone footage emerged of a shark swimming off the west coast of Australia before disappearing into deeper waters.

In February, a 35-year-old surfer died after being attacked by a 15-foot white man off the coast of Little Bay in Sydney.

Spectators watched in horror from the beach as the predator plunged from the water in what was the first shark fatality in the region in nearly 60 years.

Last year, a massive 900-pound tiger shark was spotted by a group of fishermen in Sydney after battling with the sea creature.

Great whites can grow to almost 20 feet in length and weigh up to 120 pounds. Australia recorded 18 shark attacks last year, including three fatalities.
