Tiger Woods confirms he plans to play at the Masters this week

The master begins today with the winner of one of golf’s most prestigious events set to walk away with a mammoth check.

The first major of the year takes center stage at Augusta National and all eyes will be on it Tiger Woods after his remarkable recovery. He is returning to competition for the first time in 14 months after a horrific car accident last February and Woods told reporters at his Tuesday news briefing: “At the moment I have the feeling that I will play.

“I can hit it well – I have no qualms about what I can do physically from a golf perspective. Walking is the hard part! 72 holes is a long way.

“It’s a tough challenge and a challenge I’m up for. I love competitions. And if I feel like I can still play, I will. There will be a day when that won’t happen.”

Although Woods insists he believes he can win another Masters, it is Jon Rahm who is the favorite to win his first green jacket and the estimated cash prize of £1,581,894. The combined prize money for 2022 is £8,720,738, but despite that staggering number, it only ranks third out of the four golf majors overall in terms of prize money on offer.

The US Open tops the list with a total of £9.5m followed by the PGA Championship which is endowed with £9.1m. Current estimates for this year’s Masters earnings are unchanged from last year Hideki Matsuyama was the first Japanese golfer to win a major golf tournament.

But the prize money for other placements is also a handsome sum for those who perform well at the exclusive event. The overall split of the purse will of course shift depending on how many players are tied in different positions on the field.

The eventual champion’s prize money is secured, however, with a cool £1.5million in the offer for the green jacket wearer next Sunday. The full breakdown of the prize money is as follows:
