Matt Shakman no longer directs Star Trek 4

This is yet another bump in the path of the “Star Trek” series starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Karl Urban, and Simon Pegg. A fourth season was made years ago with a time travel storyline that will bring Chris Hemsworth back into the fray as George, the father of Captain James T. Kirk, who appears in the film’s opening sequence. first in “Star Trek” rebooted in 2008. But complicated negotiations with the cast caused the project to fall apart. Since then, there have also been attempts by Quentin Tarantino and Noah Hawley to complete various “Star Trek” films, but both were unsuccessful.

Currently, “Star Trek 4” needs a new director. Since Paramount Pictures has made “Star Trek 4” a top priority, they may be looking for a replacement. Hopefully, it’s not just a gun for hire who will obey the will of the studio, and it’s a filmmaker that will bring something special to the final frontier. Currently, the project has a screenplay by Josh Friedman and Cameron Squires (“Terminator: Dark Fate,” “Avatar: The Way of Water”), with the previous version written by Lindsey Beer (“Godzilla vs. Kong”) and Geneva Robertson-Dworet (“Captain Marvel”).

Here’s hoping Paramount can snag a new director who will impress them as much as Shakman. If the studio continues to struggle to start a new “Trek,” Shakman could end up with “Fantastic Four” and possibly return to “Star Trek.” But we bet there’s a filmmaker out there waiting for a big opportunity like this. It’s up to Paramount Pictures to make it so. (It’s the “Star Trek” reference!)

Currently, “Star Trek 4” is slated to release on December 22, 2023, but we’ll have to wait and see if this change of director leads to a delay. Matt Shakman no longer directs Star Trek 4
