Matt Smith and Emma D’Arcy say The House Of The Dragon characters’ love language is High Valyrian

“I really enjoyed the process,” D’Arcy said of their experience learning High Valyrian. “It’s like a fully functional language – it’s fully functional and so it’s really gratifying to leave it unchecked.”

Smith, on the other hand, wasn’t initially excited about the amount of High Valyrian he had to learn. “I’ve got its pages. Reams,” he shared. “At first, I was afraid of it. But when I started, I quite enjoyed learning it and enjoyed performing it.”

D’Arcy and Smith and other “House of the Dragon” actors, who must speak the magical language, were sent English translations of their lines as well as live English translations and transcripts. Voiceovers in High Valyrian so they can be heard to know how to pronounce things.

However, the ability to rote words was not enough for both actors. “You get it and then you learn the language and then you try to marry both,” Smith said.

D’Arcy was also keen to find a way to put meaning into her Valyrian line. “We did a lot of different things like using gestures during practice to try to embed meaning in sentences and see English translations or speak high Valyrian,” they shared. “I really enjoyed it.”
