ANTONIO Conte admits Tottenham will miss Matt Doherty dearly after the Spurs boss confirmed the Dubliner is out for the season.
Oherty’s managers Conte and Stephen Kenny were prepared for the worst after Doherty visited a specialist this week to assess the damage to his knee after being challenged by Aston Villa’s Matty Cash last weekend.
And today Conte admitted Doherty won’t need surgery as the injury can heal with rest, but he won’t play again this season.
“It’s really bad news for us because, as you know, Matthew improved game by game and became a really important player for us,” Conte said.
“He had great confidence. But in football such a situation can happen, an injury, now we lost it for the rest of the season.
“I think after the doctor’s first visit, the doctor said he could recover without surgery. But of course it is important in such situations to have different opinions in order to then make the best decision.
“We’re talking about seven, eight weeks to recover and for that reason his season is over. It’s a shame because he was an important player for us.
“It’s a shame, a shame for him and we’re very disappointed. Now we have to find the best solution. We have Emerson, Sergio Reguilon, Sessegnon in the squad and we have to try and do our best until the end of the season.”
Conte himself will be on the bench for the game against Brighton on Saturday following his recent coronavirus bout.
“After the game against Aston Villa the day after, I felt slight symptoms,” he said. “A bit of a sore throat so I asked for a Covid test and it was positive.
“I’m fine and I’m fine. For sure it was a strange week for me and also for the players as they are used to training with me. Not just with my employees.
“But it’s okay because my staff are doing a great job. I’ve been visiting the units remotely and I think on Saturday I’ll stick with my players on the bench.
“Given the length of time from my Covid test, I think I could remain on the bench on Saturday.”
