Matthew Weiner Had A Confusing Reaction To Jon Hamm’s Mad Men Audition

Throughout “Mad Men”, viewers have learned about Don’s past through small pieces. Not only did he grow up in poverty, but his mother died in childbirth and he witnessed his father’s death as a child. Don was then raised by an abusive stepmother before running away and starting a new life as soon as the opportunity arose. It’s a behind-the-scenes story that explains, if not necessarily the reason, a lot of Don’s suspicious behavior on the show. He is a man pretending to be someone from the same kind of wealth that his colleagues come from. He’s trying to be the perfect ’60s ideal man, and we watch seven seasons as the facade breaks.

Meanwhile, Hamm lost his mother when he was 10 years old and had a difficult relationship with his father, who died when Hamm was 20 years old. Weiner’s assumption at the audition was correct: Hamm was raised not by his parents, but by his grandmother. It’s not as harsh as what Don Draper has gone through, but maybe that’s what makes Hamm so well suited for the role.

Follow for Alan Taylor, Hamm had “great sadness and loss of quality in his eyes … a rare quality for a leading man.” That’s what Weiner believes Hamm’s childhood contributed to; he told Vanity Fair that it not only helped give Hamm the “vulnerability” but also the “smarts” needed for the role. “The most valuable thing on television and everywhere is when you find someone who is physically attractive and funny,” says Weiner. “It’s very unusual.”
