Meaning, quotes to inspire you to protect them

On World Animal Day (October 4), we turn the spotlight on the animals that roam the earth. Let’s work together today and commit to protecting the creatures who, like us, call Earth their home planet.

World Animal Day is actually not a new festival. It was first observed on March 24, 1925 in Berlin. The date was pushed back to October 4 – the originally planned date – in 1929 as it was the feast day of St. Francis, the patron saint of ecology.

The event was created to raise and hopefully improve awareness of animal welfare around the world.

Sure enough, even when humans share the earth with these wondrous creatures, many of our actions have proven horrifying to them. For example, habitat loss is said to be the cause of higher rates of extinction today. Other threats to animals include pollution, introduction of non-native species, and exploitation.

“Animal lives are profoundly affected by the actions of individuals, corporations and nations. Therefore, it is important that their rightful status as recipients of social justice is established as sentient beings and translated into effective animal welfare,” according to World Animal Day’s website. “World Animal Day embraces all animals and the unique concerns of each individual in every country and makes animals headlines.”

People can celebrate the day by looking for ways to protect animals, or perhaps by learning more about animal plight and sharing it with their friends.

You can also raise awareness by using the World Animal Day logo on your Twitter and Facebook profile pictures, donating to animal shelters, or making a commitment to help animals.

No matter how you celebrate World Animal Day, the most important thing is to spread the word and promise to make the world a better place for all living things.

On this day let’s look at some quotes that might inspire you to do just that. (Courtesy of Brainy Quote, Buzzfeed and Good Reads)

  • “More than ever, animals are a touchstone of our character, of human capacity for empathy, and for decent, honorable behavior and faithful stewardship. We are called to treat them with kindness, not because they have rights or power or any claim to equality, but in a way because they don’t; because they are all unequal and powerless before us.” – Matthew Scully
  • “A lot of people talk to animals…but not very many listen…that’s the problem.”
    -AA Milne

  • “Because we have viewed other animals through the myopic lens of our self-importance, we have misperceived who and what they are. Because we repeated our ignorance to each other, we mistaken it for knowledge.” -Tom Regan
  • “True human goodness, in all its purity and freedom, can only emerge when its recipient has no power. Mankind’s true moral test, its fundamental test (which is deeply hidden), is its attitude towards those at its mercy: animals.” -Milan Kundera
