Medvedev warns the West of a nuclear doomsday chess game with death

A senior Russian official has accused the United States and its allies of trying to provoke the country’s dissolution, warning that such attempts could lead to doomsday.

Mitry Medvedev, deputy secretary of Russia’s Security Council chaired by President Vladimir Putin, warned the West that any attempt to force Russia to collapse would be a “chess game with death.”

Mr Medvedev, who was President of Russia from 2008 to 2012 when Putin was forced to step down to the post of prime minister due to term limits, was widely seen in the West as more liberal than his mentor.

In recent months, however, he has made remarks that sound far harsher than those made by the most combative Kremlin officials in an apparent attempt to ingratiate himself with Mr Putin.

After attending yesterday’s farewell ceremony for former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, Mr Medvedev made a post on his messaging app channel in which he referred to the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and accused the US and its allies of trying to have to bring about the disintegration of Russia.

He claimed that some in the West were “exploiting the military conflict in Ukraine to push our country into a new turn of disintegration, doing everything to cripple Russia’s state institutions and depriving the country of effective controls, as happened in 1991 . ”

He wrote: “These are the dirty dreams of the Anglo-Saxons
Perverts who go to sleep with a secret thought of our state collapsing, thinking how to tear us apart, cut us into small pieces.

“Such attempts are very dangerous and should not be underestimated.

“These dreamers ignore a simple axiom: A violent dissolution of a nuclear power is always a chess game with death in which
It is known exactly when check and mate will come: doomsday for mankind.”

Mr. Medvedev concluded by stating that Russia’s nuclear arsenals are “the best guarantee of protection for Greater Russia”.
