Meet Adnan Ebrahim, Co-Founder & CEO of Sleep & Meditation App: MindLabs

MindLabs is a video-first mental wellness app led by experts and rooted in neuroscience. We’ll help you stress less, sleep better, and feel happier with video classes hosted by a variety of expert instructors in fields like neuroscience, psychology, and breathwork. Today there are over 200 courses in the app, streaming both live and on-demand.

Topics covered by our trainers include sleep, stress, anxiety, mental fitness and energy. The app is designed to provide an accessible way to practice mindfulness by integrating biomarker data from connected wearable devices to measure mental health progress over time. We recently launched the MindLabs Series – collections of progressive courses designed to help you build healthier habits, dig deeper into the issues that matter to you, and see lasting positive change.

How did you come up with the idea for the company?

I’ve been obsessed with the idea of developing a mental health product since I first encountered mental health issues myself. In my mid-20s, as the founder of a media startup, I grappled with the extreme ups and downs of running a business in a tough industry and discovered mindfulness techniques as a way to relieve stress and feel better . Along with my co-founder Gabor, who has also successfully addressed his own health anxiety issues with mindfulness practices, we decided to address the growing problem with the mind of our generation.

We’ve found that while first-gen meditation apps have seen strong growth as a result of the pandemic, they’re really just scratching the surface of what’s possible. Today they are still one-size-fits-all, audio-focused solutions where you can’t see if you’re getting better or not.

We decided to build an app that you can use anywhere; at home, at work or in bed. We believe the next big wave of mental health solutions will combine digital scales with a more personalized offering.

The term “mental health” is often perceived negatively, and we are passionate about enhancing “spiritual wealth” by maximizing mental capacity. MindLabs was created with the aim of normalizing working on your mental fitness and making it as everyday as going to the gym to improve your physical health.

How has MindLabs developed during the pandemic?

MindLabs started in the early stages of the pandemic. The company was founded in May 2020, at a time when everyone’s mental health was under pressure. After seeing that mindfulness was very effective in managing my own mental health, I wanted to help others better manage stress and anxiety in their lives. There was a gap in the market for a mobile-first, video-led mental health platform that would give millennials the support they needed.

After building a prototype and beta testing our product, we quickly realized that there was a demand for a platform like this. Our funding enabled us to assemble a world-class team of experts across healthtech, neuroscience and consumer space.

After testing our MindLabs courses online and building a dedicated user base, we launched our app in the UK and across Europe in late January this year, which was a huge milestone for us.

What can we expect from MindLabs in the future?

We attach great importance to closing the feedback loop when measuring progress. We believe this is key to building a positive habit to improve your mental health, just as you can measure progress at the gym by looking at weight loss or muscle mass gain.

Part of closing this feedback loop is looking at valuable biomarker data that is now ubiquitous thanks to the plethora of connected wearables we now use on a daily basis; from Apple Watches to Oura rings. We believe that this collected data not only tells us how we are doing physically, but also mentally. Valuable markers include breathing rate, sleep quality, and heart rate, which can be used to provide you with relevant content exactly when you need it.

International expansion will also be important for MindLabs, particularly in the US. It is reported that four million American adults paid for meditation in the last year, despite a huge churn of first-wave meditation app users. So we know that there is pent-up demand for those who haven’t found the right solution yet. Meet Adnan Ebrahim, Co-Founder & CEO of Sleep & Meditation App: MindLabs
