Meet Idit Levine, Founder and CEO of Solo.io

Five years ago, Idit Levine’s dream of starting her own business became a reality with Solo.io, a $1 billion modern application networking company today. Solo.io’s impressive growth is a true testament to Idit’s dedication, something that has not only made her successful in business but has spurred her through her military service and on the court as a pro basketball player.

Shoot for the cloud(s)

Born and raised in Israel, where her grandparents settled after World War II, Idit spent much of her youth shooting hoops in the streets until dark – basketball was her passion. “I joined my first team when I was about 13, but soon I was playing professionally for Elitzur-Holon,” says Idit. “By the time I was 18, I was juggling up to six hours of basketball practice a day alongside Israel’s mandatory military service.”

The balancing act continued after Idit completed her time in the Israeli military when she pursued degrees in computer science and biology, following in the footsteps of her older siblings with successful careers in the technology sector. Idit’s passion for her studies grew and when it came to choosing between basketball and computer science; The latter won with a slam dunk.

“After deciding on a career in engineering, I moved to the United States. First to San Diego and then to Boston, where I live now. All this time I worked as a software developer for DynamicOps and EMC Dell as well as several other startups and large companies, but in the back of my mind I was waiting for the right time to start my own business.”

Walk alone! Idit becomes the first founder

With a wealth of experience behind her, Idit took the plunge in 2017 to pursue her ultimate goal of starting her own business. “Becoming a founder has always been a dream of mine, and I saw an opportunity to fulfill it as companies began to move from traditional, monolithic architectures to cloud computing adoption. As with any technological growth, applications had become more sophisticated and broken down into smaller pieces called microservices. This resulted in a huge increase in the number of independent applications in organizations and they struggled to cope with this change.”

Idit created Solo.io to help organizations with the challenges associated with this change. Their Gloo Application Networking Platform is built on open-source technologies such as Envoy Proxy and Istio, ensuring connectivity, security, and reliability of application communications.

Today, Solo.io does more than just develop open-source software: “We provide our customers with the tools they need to facilitate service-to-service communications, enforce security, and ensure reliability; but we also impart knowledge to them. We publish a lot of technical content and offer community training through our Solo Academy – which is actually a leading resource for developer-centric, hands-on training for Istio!”

Celebrating start-up success

Just five years after its launch, Solo.io has evolved from a series of open-source projects into a commercial application networking platform. In 2021, the company’s sales increased threefold and this year is expected to grow up to sixfold. Additionally, Solo.io’s customer base includes some of the world’s largest companies such as T-Mobile, Pega, ADP, BMW, American Express, and Booking.com. Last year they achieved a 100% renewal rate.

The company’s achievements have not gone unnoticed by investors, as Solo.io has secured $171.5 million in venture funding backing to date. “I am incredibly proud and happy to be able to celebrate these incredible achievements.
