Tell us about hair syrup, how did it start?

Hair Syrup was founded in late 2020 during my second year at the University of Warwick. It was never my intention to actually start a company – or even develop a product to be sold. Instead, I originally created these products to combat some of my own personal ongoing hair issues, including breakage, dryness, dandruff, and slow growth. I have developed hair oils that take care of all these problems together and literally transform my hair in a matter of months.

When lockdown came and TikTok gained popularity, I – like many others – downloaded the app to see what all the fuss was about and to take my mind off my upcoming sophomore assignments. In Spring 2020 I noticed that “hairtok” was trending – it was basically a section of the app dedicated to all things healthy hair. I saw many people showing off their hair transformations and describing the routine that helped them restore their curls and I decided to do the same.

At the time I had a total of 3 followers – including my mother, my boyfriend and my sister-in-law. I really enjoyed using the app and had fun playing around with it and filming my hair care routine. I recorded my step-by-step washing routine – including the most important step which was the pre-wash oil treatment (now known as hair syrup) and posted the video; can’t wait to get more than 10 views. However, when I woke up the next morning, the video had indeed gone viral, amassing over 600,000 views over the next few weeks. I’ve trawled through hundreds of comments and was surprised to see hundreds asking for more information about the oil, many even offering to pay over £30 for me to send them a bottle!

I was happy that my video had gone viral but didn’t think twice about it until a few months passed and I was still being sent DMs from people asking me to give them my PayPal details so they could deposit me some money could exchange for a bottle of this magical oil. I of course declined & didn’t send anyone anything – I thought that was a pretty strange request at the time – ironically. After receiving another pleading message late one night in bed, my boyfriend jokingly said to me, “Imagine if you actually sold that stuff.” From then on, the seed was sown and the creation of hair syrup began.

What challenges have you encountered?

Being an entrepreneur comes with so many challenges – there have been so many trials and tribulations that I’ve encountered that I could talk about, but I try not to get too bogged down in them. I’d say the biggest challenge comes when the time comes to scale up every few months. It takes most businesses many years to get to where I am now, and while I’m very grateful for the accelerated success, it comes at a price.

I often feel like a rabbit in the spotlight – when my tiny hand cast products suddenly became an internet sensation and I had thousands of units to ship and retailers contacted me, it was very overwhelming at times! Moving to a commercial building was challenging – dealing with lawyers and contracts was really challenging and super stressful – but necessary for the business to grow and thrive.

What can we expect from Hair Syrup in the future?

I hope the future holds many retail partnerships and many more collaborators for hair syrup. The vision I have for the company is to take it down the retail route – I have 2 major online retailers I’m launching with this year which is amazing. My absolute dream is to be on the shelves in boots, so fingers crossed!
