How did you come up with the idea for the company?

We looked at how our customers train their employees on cybersecurity. We have conducted market research and a number of interviews and workshops where we have found that the way companies train employees is generally not fit for purpose.

We can tick the training complete box, but the training doesn’t change anything – let alone helping people behave safely online. Most training programs inform – but just watching a video every now and then will not change the way people think and act. Given my background in Psychology and Behavioral Sciences, we saw an opportunity to develop something that could actually make a measurable difference to enterprise security. This gave rise to the idea of ​​using proven behavioral sciences as a basis for training.

How has the company performed during the pandemic?

The pandemic was a double-edged sword. It took some pressure off as we felt there was some time to get to market. At the beginning of the pandemic, I started a consulting job on cybersecurity awareness, behavior and culture.

Because of this, I received an income and was still able to devote time to developing the behavioral platform. My customer became a Psybersafe customer, so everything went well. Unfortunately, I contracted Covid-19 just after Christmas 2020 as we prepared to go live with the first major client. I was in hospital for 6 weeks with serious complications related to Covid-19 – I was seriously ill. But we kept things going, albeit much more slowly, and the client was very understanding. We started the Psybersafe campaign two months late, but luckily it was successful!

What can we expect from Psybersafe in the future?

Our training is not a one-time fix and forget. Sustainable behavioral changes require sustainable interventions. Threats don’t just change and evolve: the way we should act and behave needs constant support, challenge and reward. That’s why we’re constantly developing new episodes to keep the topics fresh and interesting, and to ensure we’re providing our users with a steady flow of interactive learning moments.

We learn from them too, and that allows us to continually improve our user journeys and episode streams. We want to share the know-how of big companies with small companies at a price they can afford.

Our goal is to acquire two or three large customers per year and a continuous stream of SME companies. To achieve this goal, we need to expand our customer success team and content creators. Over the next three years, we will carefully expand our training content, with different types of interactions, to support our behavior change goals. The company will become self-sustaining and continue to develop its behavioral science roots in other sectors, bringing our expertise beyond cybersecurity to areas that will benefit from this focused approach.
