Meet Mark Sasson, founder of Pinpoint

How did you come up with the idea for the company?

When I started building a cybersecurity practice at my previous company in 2014, I noticed that many of my competitors described themselves as IT recruiters or recruiting generalists. This lack of focus led to frustration among cybersecurity professionals, as headhunters displayed little knowledge of the industry in which they operated.

My goal was to offer an alternative, a recruitment service that would provide subject matter expertise to the clients it serves. From 2014 to 2018, I did a crash course on the provider side of the cybersecurity industry with the goal of becoming THE expert in cybersecurity recruitment.

In 2019, I acquired this cybersecurity practice and transformed it into Pinpoint Search Group. The mission was – and continues to be – to raise the bar in cybersecurity vendor recruitment.

How has the company developed in recent years?

Pinpoint’s development was inspired by the widely accepted notion that data is the world’s most valuable asset. You can’t be a subject matter expert if you don’t collect and analyze data in real time.

Rather than being reactive and identifying candidates based on the needs of a single search, we have started to track investments in cybersecurity vendors and map the talent within those organizations. This allowed us to categorize talent by location, function, and cybersecurity segment, to name a few.

Aside from the operational benefits for Pinpoint, the financing and acquisition data allows us to offer a consulting service. The data has the potential to inform our clients’ talent acquisition decisions. It can also serve as a guide for professionals when researching their next move. So we decided to publish monthly, quarterly and yearly reports. No goals, no fees, no catch.

What can we expect from you in the future?

Pinpoint will continue to strive for excellence to achieve our goal of brokering winning matches between cybersecurity vendors and the professionals in the industry. That said, to be this valuable resource, it’s not enough to fill out a search or two. Pinpoint will be an advisory partner to the professionals that make up the cybersecurity industry through the continued open dissemination of industry information.

Employers benefit from insight into the size of the talent pool in a specific region within the US. Real-time data on compensation packages informs hiring managers whether their budgets will be competitive, and professionals can inquire whether they are being adequately compensated. Our charts depicting funding and M&A trends are becoming more sophisticated and providing more relevant data.
