Perfeggt is a Berlin-based foodtech company specializing in the research, development and production of plant-based egg alternatives. The first Perfeggt product is made with a complex, plant-based protein system and can be prepared as scrambled eggs or omelettes. It can also be used for baked goods like pancakes and muffins.
Our multidisciplinary, international team, consisting of myself, my co-founder Gary Lin and our Chief Product Officer Bernd Becker, provides the company with experienced entrepreneurs, pioneers and specialists in alternative proteins.
Perfeggt researches vegetable protein sources and their combinations that come closest to the nutritional and functional properties of chicken eggs. In this way we can create food that is convincing in texture, aroma and taste and therefore loved by everyone.
Our company was founded in early 2021 and our impact-driven approach immediately attracted interest from investors such as EVIG Group, Stray Dog Capital, Good Seed Ventures, E²DJD, Tet Ventures, Sustainable Food Ventures and Shio Capital, who raised $2.8M/2 .5 million euros invested in the first round of financing.
How did you come up with the idea for Perfeggt?
Due to my family background in small-scale farming and my experience in the food-tech and agri-tech sectors, I have become increasingly aware of the unsustainable processes in the food industry. But alternatives can be created with innovative technology, and while the plant-based milk and meat markets have boomed over the past five years, eggs have remained untapped. With 1.3 trillion eggs consumed annually worldwide and 110 billion in Europe alone, the market is poised for a plant-based option.
Being a vegetarian since I was young, I could never find a suitable egg alternative to go fully vegan, so I decided to create one. I wanted to market something that could rival the taste and texture of chicken eggs. Using breakthrough technology, Perfeggt can be pan-fried like scrambled eggs and omelets, and can also replace a whole egg in baked goods without compromising on flavor or texture.
My co-founder Gary Lin has worked successfully for years to build companies that replace animal products in food with more sustainable ingredients. With Bernd Becker, we have a pioneer and expert in alternative proteins on our team whose top priority is to develop plant-based foods that have the same taste and experience that consumers get from animal sources.
How has the company performed during the pandemic?
The pandemic has prompted consumers and businesses to think more about how our food system works and where the weaknesses lie. Awareness of plant-based alternatives has increased. Supply chains, healthy eating and sustainable living are buzzwords we are hearing now. This increased interest has prompted us to think about egg alternatives and develop Perfeggt during the pandemic.
What can we expect from Perfeggt in the future?
Our goal is to become the number one egg brand in Europe and to define the entire category with our company and the products we offer. With our plant-based egg, we are on the right track to designing a nutritional system that is significantly more sustainable and gentle.
The capital raised in our first round of funding will support Perfeggt’s launch and expansion in Europe later in 2022. We are poised to launch our first non-chicken egg product – a liquid that can be prepared as scrambled eggs or omelettes – shortly in Germany to bring , Switzerland and Austria, in the food service segment. In the course of 2022, we also want to offer Perfeggt in food retail and are continuously working on the development of other plant-based egg applications.
