“Congratulations to the Illinois Lottery on selling their winning ticket to the $1.337 billion Mega Millions jackpot,” said Pat McDonald, who currently serves as lead director for the Mega Millions Consortium, in a statement.
“We are thrilled to have witnessed one of the biggest jackpot wins in Mega Millions history. We are excited to see who won and look forward to congratulating the winner soon! Better still, this exciting jackpot run has had a significant positive impact on our member lotteries’ revenue for good causes.”
The jackpot winner has correctly guessed all six drawn numbers plus the golden Mega Ball. The top prize was the second largest jackpot in Mega Millions history.
A total of 26 players matched five numbers and won $1 million each. Six of those players, one from Arkansas, Iowa, Pennsylvania and three from Florida, used the Megaplier to win Match 5, each winning $2 million.
There were 375 players who each won $10,000 by matching four numbers plus the golden Mega Ball. Meanwhile, 68 of those players have hit the Match 4 plus the golden Mega Ball with the Megaplier, winning $20,000 in the process.
The rest of the night’s prizes ranged from $2 to $1,000. A total of 14,391,740 winning tickets were sold in all price categories in the drawing on Friday evening.
After the big win, the Mega Millions jackpot resets to $20 million with a $11.6 million cash option. The next drawing will be held on Tuesday, August 2nd at 11:00pm ET.
Lottery winners can choose to receive their winnings in the form of a one-time lump sum payment or an annuity.
Those who choose the annuity receive an immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments that increase by 5% each year.
Mega Millions can be played in 45 states as well as the US Virgin Islands and the District of Columbia.
