Queen’s Jubilee: Harry and Meghan arrive for Thanksgiving service

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s anniversary appearance revealed a “deep rift” within the royal family, an expert has said.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex returned to the US after attending just one Queen’s Platinum Jubilee event.

Her appearance at the monarch’s Thanksgiving service at St Paul’s Cathedral was a chilly affair, with Harry standing a significant distance from his brother Prince William.

Harry and Meghan sat second row for the service, which Her Majesty was unable to attend due to complaints during the previous day’s celebrations.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams claims the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are now “obvious outsiders” in The Firm.

He told that To express : “A deep rift remains with the Royal Family, although much has evidently been happening behind the scenes to facilitate their visit for the Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

“This follows her visit to the Queen before the Invictus Games began. It would benefit everyone if it could be cured and the royal family reunited.”

Mr Fitzwilliams said it was “not surprising” that the royal couple had decided to extend their lease of Frogmore Cottage in Windsor, giving them a “base” in the UK.

Harry and Meghan were expected to let the Frogmore Cottage lease expire after they leave the UK for America, but they have committed to a new 12-month rolling deal.

Royal insiders believe the move could mean the Sussexes are planning to spend more time in Windsor.

A source told the Sun: “It’s quite a signal that they’re not going away. You could easily give up on Frogmore now that her life is in California.

“By agreeing to extend the lease and focusing on Portugal, Jack and Eugenie have a strong presence in the middle of Windsor Court, where everything happens. You can now come and go as you please.

“The coming year could be one of the most turbulent in royal history and the Sussexes are making sure they get a foothold in Windsor.”

A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: “Frogmore Cottage remains the British home of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.”

But Mr Fitzwilliams said he doesn’t think the Sussexes will make Britain their home.

He added: “Just over a year ago they performed their last royal duties and their strained relations with the Cambridges were shown for the Commonwealth Day Service at Westminster Abbey.

“Then came their interview about Oprah, which was so destructive, and their behavior was unpredictable to say the least, even though they found freedom in California as they see it.

“Your relations with the Cambridges remain distant. Her popularity ratings in the UK are dismal. Harry’s memoir is reportedly due out later this year, and there’s a reported ‘Fly on the Wall’ documentary series for Netflix, although details are unclear.

“Her future is obviously in the United States, but with regular trips to Britain as relations with the royal family improve and when Harry is comfortable with security.”
