Meghan Markle discusses ‘toxic’ Asian stereotypes as podcast returns after Queen Elizabeth’s death

Meghan Markle spoke about “toxic” Asian stereotypes as her podcast returned to Spotify after a four-week hiatus due to the death of Queen Elizabeth.

Arkle has postponed all upcoming episodes of her Spotify podcast Archetypes during the official “mourning period”.

The fourth episode of Archetypes was released Tuesday morning, in which Markle explored the “dragon lady” stereotype of Asian women with journalist Lisa Ling and comedian Margaret Cho.

The term was coined in the 1930s and was used to describe a “powerful but spiky” East Asian woman.

Markle first shared her experience of growing up in Los Angeles, which was “full of culture to see, feel, hear and taste on a daily basis.”

She added that growing up in California, she had a “genuine love” for exploring other cultures.

“I would spend my weekends in Little Tokyo or having iced teas and Thai, Town would be at a Chinese restaurant with my friend Kristina Wong and her parents,” she recalled.

Speaking of going to a Korean spa with her mother, Doria, as a teenager, she said: “It’s a very humbling experience for a girl going through puberty because you walk into a room with women from the ages of nine to maybe 90 , all walking around naked, waiting at one of those rows of tables to get a body scrub. All I wanted was a bathing suit.

“As soon as I got over that teenage embarrassment, my mom and I went upstairs, sat in a room and ate a steaming bowl of the most delicious pasta.”

The Duchess has criticized films like Austin Powers and Kill Bill for how they portray Asian women on screen, describing these “caricatures of women of Asian descent as often being overly sexualized or aggressive”.

Markle said it wasn’t until many years later that she realized how damaging these stereotypes could be.

“The dragon lady, the East Asian seductress whose mysterious alien attraction is both alluring and deadly,” she told Cho on the podcast.

“It seeped into a lot of our conversation. But this toxic stereotype of Asian women doesn’t stop once the credits roll.”
