Meghan Markle’s animated series about a young girl has been canceled by Netflix.

The Show by Archewell Productions pearl – one of two projects announced as part of Harry and Meghan’s Netflix deal – was set to focus on the adventures of a 12-year-old girl inspired by influential women from history.

Meghan was set to serve as executive producer on the series alongside David Furnish – the filmmaker and husband of Elton John – according to an announcement published on Archewell’s website last July.

However pearl was dropped by Netflix as part of strategic decisions the streaming giant is making around animated series.

It is understood that Netflix has decided not to go ahead with the development of several projects, one of which pearl.

This is not believed to be unusual for development, and Netflix recently decided not to proceed with other animated series.

Harry and Meghan signed a multi-million pound deal with Netflix in 2020.

The message that pearl is being shut down after Netflix revealed that it lost 200,000 users in the first three months of 2022, falling far short of predictions that it would add 2.5 million subscribers.

Netflix has stumbled in the face of increasing competition from companies like Disney, Amazon Prime and movie theaters reopening.

The US company’s share value has halved in the past six months as investors have grown concerned about the fortunes’ performance.

According to Netflix, Archewell Productions remains a valued partner and they continue to work together on a number of projects, including the documentary series Heart of Invictus.

The show follows people taking part in the Invictus Games and a camera crew was seen near Harry and Meghan during their time at the event in The Hague, Netherlands last month.

When pearl Announced last July, Meghan said: “Like many girls her age, our heroine Pearl finds herself on a journey of self-discovery as she tries to navigate life’s daily challenges.

“I’m thrilled that Archewell Productions, in partnership with Netflix’s powerful platform and these incredible producers, will bring together this new animated series that celebrates exceptional women throughout history.

“David Furnish and I have been very keen to bring this special series to light and I’m delighted to announce it today.”

An announcement on Archewell’s website on July 14, 2021 reads: “Archewell Productions is creating its first-ever animated series with Netflix.

pearl (working title) focuses on the heroic adventure of a young girl as she learns to empower herself and finds inspiration from influential women throughout history.

“Meghan, Duchess of Sussex will serve as executive producer on the series alongside David Furnish, Carolyn Soper, Liz Garbus, Dan Cogan and Amanda Rynda.”

According to the Archewell website, Archewell Productions was founded by Harry and Meghan “to produce programming that informs, uplifts and inspires”.

The website – which says Archewell Productions will “use the power of storytelling to embrace our shared humanity and duty to truth through a compassionate lens” – lists Heart of Invictus and pearl like the two “exciting projects” it announced.
