MSNBC’s Mehdi Hasan on Sunday called out Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican presidential nominee for 2024, for his latest “transparent pitch” to win over evangelical Christian voters.
during one interview Last week, DeSantis told the Christian Broadcasting Network he would have liked to have been one of the original disciples of Jesus Christ.
“These guys all went out and dedicated their lives to spreading the gospel,” DeSantis said. “I look back and would have liked to have been there.”
Hasan could not overcome the “sheer arrogance” of this Republican statement.
“Imagine for a second if there had been a Ron along with Peter, John, James and Co.,” he said, and then imagined how that might have turned out:
“One Ron who said, ‘You’re too awake Jesus,’ every time Jesus helped the poor and used loaves and fish to feed the hungry Ron.’ you are too awake Let them pull themselves up by their own boots.” Every time Jesus said, “I don’t know, we should hug refugees and migrants,” Ron said, “Stop all vigilance, Jesus.” Send them to Martha’s Vineyard . In the Holy Land the awakened go to die.’”
“The truth is that the Jesus of the Gospels and his disciples were way too leftist for Ronald DeSantis,” Hasan told MSNBC colleague Ayman Mohyeldin.
Mohyeldin said DeSantis has gone from worshiping “cult leader” Donald Trump to running against him for the nomination — and that may result in supporters of the former president seeing him as a very particular supporter.
“He was probably more of a Judas than a Peter,” said Mohyeldin. “Even Donald Trump noticed this betrayal.”
He played a clip in which Trump called DeSantis “disloyal.”
“Call me crazy, but at the end of the day, I’m not so sure that positioning yourself as Judas in the eyes of the Trump cults is the right way to win over believers,” he said, laughing.
