Mel B says MBE is for “all other women” who experience domestic violence

Mel B dedicated her MBE to “all other women” involved in domestic violence when accepting the award from the Duke of Cambridge.

The 46-year-old pop star was honored during an investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday morning after being made an MBE for services to charity and vulnerable women.

Mel B, whose real name is Melanie Brown, first rose to fame as Scary Spice in the Spice Girls and became a patron of the charity Women’s Aid in 2018 after exiting what she described as an abusive relationship.

After picking up her MBE, she told the PA news agency the experience was “absolutely beautiful”.

I am her voice because we all went through the exact same story so I don’t take it as my award because it’s our award for survivingMel B

“I never thought I would get this MBE for the work I’ve done here,” she said.

“It’s amazing to have, but it’s not just for me — it’s for all the other women.

“Particularly because of Covid there has been such an epidemic of domestic violence that has totally increased and you know I have an army of women behind me who need help and need to be heard.

“So I’m her voice because we all went through the exact same story, so I don’t take it as my award because it’s our award for surviving.”

When asked about her conversation with William, she said, “He complimented me on all the work I’ve done and he said, ‘I’m so sorry you’ve been through such a horrible time.’

“He said, ‘I can’t believe I’m giving you one like this — I’m so excited,’ and I said, ‘Aw, thanks,’ and we had to giggle.”

When asked about her career highlights, she said, “I’ve had a really amazing life so far and it’s turned into something horrible for 10 years and I’ve created something worthwhile.”

She also hinted that there’s more to come from the Spice Girls, adding, “There’s so much stuff but I don’t want to say anything until it actually happens and I don’t want to jinx myself and I’m always the first to burst out out of it all This time I’m silent – enjoy this moment.”

It was the first major investiture at the Queen’s London residence since the pandemic began more than two years ago.

The palace has been undergoing a 10-year £369million renovation project to update essential services, but work has been put on hold for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

Investitures continue to take place at Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace during the summer.

The change does not represent a permanent return to Investitures in the Castle as the construction project is ongoing.
