Melanie C said she canceled a show in Poland on New Year’s Eve after becoming aware of issues that “didn’t sit well with the community I support”.
Spice Girl, 48, did not elaborate but was praised online by members of the LGBT community.
Poland, an EU member, has been criticized by gay rights activists in recent years for discriminating against members of the LGBT community, with education reforms coming to an end. LGBT-inclusive curriculum; and the ‘LGBTQ+ Free Zone’ initiated by local councils in parts of the country.
The singer, whose real name is Melanie Chisholm and a longtime gay rights advocate, is expected to perform in the city of Zakopane.
But in a statement posted on Monday, she wrote: “Due to a number of issues that caught my attention, which are not suitable for the community I support, I am afraid I will not be able to perform in Poland. more. plan on New Year’s Eve.
“I hope to be back there soon. Hope you all are having a wonderful Christmas and best wishes for 2023. Melanie xxx.”
In response to her statement, Twitter users described her as a “hero” and an “ally”.
