Melanie C said she was sexually assaulted during a hotel massage the night before the Spice Girls’ premiere concert in Turkey.
The 48-year-old singer, whose real name is Melanie Chisholm, discussed the experience with Elizabeth Day on the podcast How to Fail while promoting her upcoming memoir Who I Am.
Also known as Sporty Spice, Melanie C said the incident left her feeling “intrusive, vulnerable and embarrassed”.
She said: “We were in Istanbul, we did two shows and we had never done a long concert before, so obviously we had been practicing for weeks. before.
“Everything is leading to the pinnacle of everything I ever wanted to do and ever wanted to be.
“What motivates me is being on stage, being an artist. So it was the eve of the first Spice Girls show, so I treated myself to a massage in the hotel and what happened to me, I immediately buried because there was other things to focus on.
“I don’t want to make a fuss, but I don’t have time to deal with it either. Because I wasn’t dealing with it at the time, I realized I’d let that get buried for years and years.”
The singer said the experience came to her in a dream while she was writing her memoir and she decided to include it.
“I think it’s really important for me to speak up and really deal with it and process it as well as for other people. Terrible things happen all the time and the situation is not as bad as it could be.
“In a version of sexual assault, it is a gentle version but I feel violated, I feel very vulnerable, I feel embarrassed, and then I feel uncertain, do i have this right, what’s going on.

“I’ve been in an environment where you undress with this professional, so there’s a lot of thought and emotion, and I just thought I wanted to talk about it because it affected me.”
The former Spice Girl singer’s book will follow her journey from her bedroom in the northwest of England to global recognition with the group.
