Dublin MEP Clare Daly has denounced the European Union’s sanctions on Russia, claiming that she is acting on behalf of NATO.
s Daly, along with her colleague Mick Wallace, was one of 13 MPs who previously voted against a motion to condemn the Russian invasion Ukraine.
That resolution outlined the EU’s condemnation of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but the two MEPs said they could not support the motion because it also expressed support for NATO and called for arms supplies to Ukraine.
Speaking in the European Parliament on Wednesday, Ms Daly said sanctions on Russia had “created economic devastation” which she said was “paid for” by the Russian people, including those “protesting the war”.
“How is selling Kerrygold butter to Russia not saving a Ukrainian life? How will buying dirty fracking US gas stop the war?” she said.
“Of course they won’t, because nowhere have sanctions ever succeeded in ending a military attack or in bringing about regime change.”
Ms Daly appeared to be incorrectly referring to recent news of the Kerry Group’s withdrawal from Russia with Kerrygold being manufactured in North Cork by a separate company, Ornua.
The Independents 4 Change MP accepted that Russia “has responsibility” for invading Ukraine, but said that “we cannot ignore NATO’s role”.
“Instead of promoting peace and acting in the interest of the people of Europe towards the Ukrainians, the EU citizens and, yes, also the Russian citizens, the EU has become a tool of NATO and the military-industrial complex,” he said she.
“What we need is an end to the conflict, an end to militarism, a ceasefire and a negotiated settlement.”
Ornua, an Irish food co-operative, and Kerrygold are not commercially active in Russia.
A spokesman for Ornua said: “Kerrygold is the proud property of Ornua. Neither Kerrygold nor Ornua are active in Russia.”
Ms Daly claimed sanctions against Russia would not stop its invasion of Ukraine.
“History has taught us that sanctions do not end military conflicts. They don’t bring peace,” she said.
“They make the people suffer, not the oligarchs – the people, the people of Russia, the people of Europe, and they won’t help save lives because the more weapons you pump into Ukraine, the longer the war will last.” , the more Ukrainians can and will die, and it may sound radical, colleagues, but the answer to war is no more war.”
She added: “We will sit down with Russia, there will be a negotiated peace, and this organization should promote it sooner. Instead of delaying it and causing more Ukrainians to die, your fake sympathy rings hollow – it sickens me, to be honest with you.”
