dr Kieran Hickey, the head of the Department of Geography at University College Cork, said there was an “extreme heat wave” across Europe at the moment.

“Obviously we are now at the peak of summer in terms of temperatures but when we see temperatures in the high 40s in western Europe we really have to watch out,” he told RTÉ’s Morning Ireland.

“And I suppose, especially if England breaks the 40C mark at some point today, or even 41C, that definitely tells us something about the climate.

“History tells us that exactly what we said global warming is going to do to northwestern Europe, it’s starting to happen.

“It won’t happen every summer but certainly we will see these types of events much more often and start to affect Ireland as well. Although we are quite well protected as we are far out in the Atlantic.”

Tomorrow will be characterized by mostly dry weather with scattered light showers in the morning, mostly limited to the west and north-west coasts during the afternoon.

A generally cloudy start to the day, but sunny spells break through as the day progresses.

On Thursday the day will start brightly with scattered rays of sunshine and only a few light showers.

However, it will become cloudier in the afternoon, with patchy light rain and drizzle developing along the west and south-west coasts.

The highest temperatures are between 16°C and 20°C with a light, variable breeze.

On Friday the day will start cloudy with some persistent rain and drizzle in the east and north.

In the morning and early afternoon it will brighten up with only a few light showers, but later it will become cloudier again, towards the evening rain showers and drizzle will move to western areas.

Maximum temperatures are between 17°C and 21°C with a light to moderate south-west breeze. Met Éireann forecast Ireland: Highs of 28C are forecast today as hot weather looks set to continue in parts of the country
