Met Éireann is issuing a yellow wind and rain warning for western counties

Met Éireann has issued an amber wind and rain warning for five western counties, beginning in the early hours of this morning.

The warning was issued for counties Clare, Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo from 2am Friday morning until 2pm.

“Tonight and Friday morning will be wet and windy with strong and gusty southerly winds developing. Heavy rains can cause localized flooding,” Met Éireann said.

Today will remain mostly dry apart from a few light showers, however the weather is expected to turn for the worse during the night.

Met Éireann said there will be “long autumn sunshine and only a partial cloud build-up” in the afternoon. After a cool start today, afternoon temperatures are between 14 and 17 °C.

It will be dry early tonight initially but clouds will thicken from the west and rain will spread to Atlantic counties before midnight. Rain will sweep east across the country overnight and become heavy and persistent, with the possibility of localized flooding. The rain will be accompanied by increasing southerly winds, with storms developing along the coasts. The lowest temperatures range from 6 °C to 10 °C.

The meteorologist said Friday morning will be wet and windy, with outbreaks of rain and some “stormy downpours”. Rain will drain east into the Irish Sea in the afternoon, with sunny intervals and showers following from the west. Maximum temperatures of 13°C to 17°C are expected.

Friday night will be windy with clear spells and extended showers. Some heavy showers and thunder will develop in the Atlantic coastal regions. The minimum temperatures are between 9 ° C and 12 ° C.

Met Éireann said Saturday will be a bright day with a mix of sunshine and showers. However, it will be cloudier in the southern coastal districts and there may be intermittent rain towards the evening. Maximum temperatures of 13°C to 16°C are forecast.

All rain in the southern coastal areas abates on Saturday evening, leaving much of the country dry apart from a few rain showers in the north. The minimum temperatures are between 6 °C and 10 °C.

The forecaster said Sunday would be a “mostly dry day” with sunny spells and only scattered showers. Maximum temperatures of 13°C to 16°C are expected.

Sunday night will be mostly dry, with some clear spells and lowest temperatures of 6°C to 10°C.

On Monday morning it will be mostly cloudy with scattered rain showers or drizzle. The afternoon will see persistent rain across the west and north of the country, with highs of 13C to 17C.

“Tuesday looks set to be damp and windy with mostly cloudy skies and a chance of rain or drizzle. Very mild and humid with highs of 16 to 19 degrees with fresh and gusty southerly winds,” Met Éireann said.
