An AMBER Extreme Heat Warning has been issued for Sussex as temperatures are set to rise again.

The alert, issued by the Met Office, covers much of southern England and parts of east Wales, with the risk of potential impacts on health, transport and infrastructure.

The warning goes into effect on Thursday and will last through the end of the week.

Temperatures in Brighton are expected to rise to 30C tomorrow and remain high into Sunday.

The Met Office’s deputy chief meteorologist Dan Rudman said: “Thanks to ongoing high pressure over the UK, temperatures are set to rise by the day this week and an extreme heat warning has been issued.

“Temperatures are expected to peak at 35C on Friday and Saturday, or even an isolated 36C on Saturday. Elsewhere, temperatures will drop well into the high 20s and low 30s.

“Coupled with the high daytime temperatures, there will be some warm nights, with temperatures not expected to drop below the low 20s for some areas in the south.”

It comes as the UK Health Safety Authority (UKHSA) issued a Level 3 heat health alert, in effect from today until Sunday.

People have been advised to look out for those who are more vulnerable to the effects of extreme heat, including the elderly, young children and those with underlying health conditions.

dr Agostinho Sousa, head of extreme events and public health at the agency, said: “Temperatures will feel very warm again this week, particularly in the southern and central parts of the country.

“We want everyone to be able to safely enjoy the warm weather when it arrives, but remember that heat can quickly affect health.

“It’s important to ensure people who are more vulnerable – elderly people living alone and those with underlying health conditions – are prepared for the hot weather.

“The most important advice is to make sure they stay hydrated and cool and take steps to prevent their homes from overheating.”

The latest heatwave comes as a hose ban for South East Water customers in Sussex is due to come into effect on Friday.

The prolonged dry conditions have also led the Met Office to warn of “extraordinary fire severity” if wildfire were to break out across much of the county on Friday and Saturday. Met Office issues extreme heat warning for Sussex over the weekend
