After years of theorizing and failed attempts, the speedrunning community has finally found a jump for the infamous ladder that is the game’s focal point for Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. This ladder, an obstacle that Snake must slowly climb for minutes to reach the top in typical playthroughs, remained a major obstacle in the speedrunning community’s path for some time.
The hero in question who figured it out is applewho tweeted the video yesterday to numerous other community members and speedrunners, who either celebrated the discovery and remained cautiously skeptical, or were upset that anyone would dare to skip this beloved scene.
Although we’ve embedded the video in this article, here’s a written explanation of how it works. When you enter the lower area, you need to equip your active inventory with three different foods. With one of the groceries in hand, lean against the pillar next to the ladder, center your camera, then press the pause menu while running forward.
By adding an empty magazine and the MIC, the player can force Snake into a T-pose state. In this state, start climbing the ladder and immediately shoot all the way to the top. Then all you have to do is pull a smooth forward roll to safety and you’ve made the jump.
