Mets, Giants in Latest Trade Rumors

Teams have run out of time to decide whether they will be buyers or sellers at the 2022 MLB trade deadline. The New York Mets are expected to be one of baseball’s most active buyers. The decision for another national league team is not so clear.

The San Francisco have not yet decided to become sellers before the deadline, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney. Competitors are waiting for the Giants to make their best players available after their recent slip.

San Francisco has lost all seven games since the All-Star hiatus ended. The losing streak has dropped the Giants to 3.5 games out of the NL wild card race. San Francisco ranks fifth in the wildcard standings. The Philadelphia Phillies sit between the Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals, the current holders of the third and final wildcard spot.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are 17.5 games ahead of the Giants for first place in the NL West. San Francisco ousted Los Angeles for the division title with 107 wins last season. The Dodgers eliminated the Giants in the NLDS.

After just a season ago, San Francisco set MLB’s all-time best regular-season record, and hopes it can make the playoffs this year. If the Giants accept that a trip to the playoffs is highly unlikely, pitcher Carlos Rodon and outfielder Joc Pederson could be traded within the next week.

The Mets are looking for players, but they probably won’t make sense as a trading partner for the Giants if San Francisco becomes a seller. According to The Athletic, New York plans to acquire multiple receivers. New York could reach for Baltimore Orioles first baseman Trey Mancini or Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras, reports SNY’s Andy Martino.

Mets reliever Drew Smith is expected to be placed on the injured list, prompting the team to seek bullpen help. New York has struggled with pitching staff injuries all season, though starter Jacob deGrom is close to making his 2022 debut.

New York has been associated with many of the best players out there. The Mets cannot be disqualified from the Juan Soto Sweepstakes.

The Mets have already traded for DH Daniel Vogelbach. Washington Nationals first baseman Josh Bell is also an option for New York.

After defeating the New York Yankees, the Mets have a three-game lead over the Atlanta Braves in the NL East. The Mets are 9.5 games ahead of the St. Louis Cardinals for last spot in the NL playoffs.
