Micah Richards claims the Champions League will have a big say in this exciting season First League title race between Manchester City and Liverpool.

As in the past few weeks, neither club made any mistakes on Saturday The Reds win 1-0 in Newcastle and City are four goals behind Leeds. The results showed that Pep Guardiola’s side maintained their narrow one-point lead at the top of the table going into the final four games of the season.

Given the way the two title contenders played, it’s very difficult to see either of them drop points in any of their remaining games. However, ex-City defender Richards fears elimination from Europe could shake the holders’ confidence and negatively affect their domestic performances.

The Sky Blues take it real Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final on Wednesday won 4-3 at the Etihad last week. Despite City being favorites to reach the final, no one could rule out the possibility of the 13-time European champions tipping over the goal line at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Richards reckons the Spanish giants’ exit from the Champions League is the “only thing” that City could open the door for Liverpool in the title race. “The only thing is if Man City were eliminated from the Champions League it could shake confidence,” the former England international told Sky Sports after the Leeds win.

“When you go into big games and you think you’re well prepared and you lose, it blows your mind. It’s the only thing holding back the rest of City [season].”

City’s title rivals Liverpool booked their place in the Champions League final with a 3-2 win at Villarreal on Tuesday evening after a 2-0 win in the first leg of the previous week. Richards claimed the two sides were the best of the Premier League era and tipped them to win all remaining games in the title race.

He added: “The standards that both City and Liverpool are setting now… In my opinion two of the best teams the Premier League has ever seen. You must keep doing this. You never know, the Premier League is so unpredictable.

“But I believe both teams will win all their remaining games, they were that good. There could be a slip or a nervous moment. After this week’s games – Liverpool win comfortably and City win comfortably – I think they will win them all.”
