Michael Masi has been sacked from his position as Formula 1 race director after the controversy in Abu Dhabi saw Lewis Hamilton lost world title.
Masi’s handling of the race’s final laps in Abu Dhabi has been closely watched since the decision saw Max Verstappen claim a first world crown.
The race director did not correctly apply the rules during the safe car time at the end of the race, which had a direct effect on the fate of the championship.
It has led to speculation Hamilton may even decide to retire before the 2022 campaign, but he has now confirmed he will continue racing for Mercedes.
But the incident caused Masi to be removed from his duties, and he has instead proposed a different role in the FIA.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem said: “I would like to inform you that a new race management team will be brought in starting from Barcelona for the test.
“Niels Wittich and Eduardo Freitas will replace as Race Directors, supported by Herbie Blash as permanent senior advisors.
“Michael Masi, who has completed a challenging three-year job as Formula 1 race director after Charlie Whiting, will be offered a new position in the FIA.
“I presented this complete plan to the members of the World Motor Sports Council and the Senate, who gave their full support.”
