Michael Morpurgo celebrates 100 years of Flying Scotsman with reading

Sir Michael Morpurgo celebrated the centenary of the Scotsman flying with a children’s reading session at King’s Cross Station in London.

His author, 79, and his longtime illustrator Michael Foreman collaborated with the National Railroad Museum in York on a book marking the event.

Titled The Flying Scotsman And The Best Birthday Ever, the film follows a young Iris as she longs to follow in the footsteps of her father, the famous train driver.

The story will take readers on a “charming journey through the golden age of steam travel, in tribute to the women who kept the railroads running during World War II”.

February 2023 marks 100 years since the Flying Scotsman went into operation and a series of events are being held to build on the occasion.

The program includes virtual reality (VR) events and special charters around the country.

The Flying Scotsman was also photographed alongside the Azuma train, reflecting the past and present trains of London North East Railway (LNER).

Built in 1923 at Doncaster Works and costing £7,944 at the time, it was the first locomotive to officially hit 100mph and the locomotive to circumnavigate the world.
