With Gemma Owen quickly rising to fame in this year’s Love Island movie, father Michael opened up about the life of a family of six in Chester.

The former England footballer met his wife Louise Bonsall at school and the couple married in 2005 – two years after Gemma was born.

Along with the aforementioned eldest sister, childhood friends include James, 15, Emily May, 14, and Jessica, 12.

The family live in a £4 million mansion with room for Gemma’s 12 horses.

Speaking on Emily Dean’s Dog walking podcast, Michael discussed his relationship with his children.

“It’s really difficult from a parent’s point of view,” he said.

“You want to give your child the best start and the best chance.

“But you always have to wrestle with the fact that if I just made it so easy, and I could do this and do that, would she learn from any mistakes? ?

“You want money that much – have a roadside pub, go to work behind a bar or something. That’s my point.”

His second oldest child, 42 years old, son James, has a rare condition known as Stargardt disease, which causes degeneration of the retina in the eye.

In an emotional interview with The Times, Michael revealed that James will not be able to follow in his footsteps.

“He will never be a footballer,” he said. “My son has an eye problem. I’ve never said this. I don’t want a big headline.

“Clinically, he is blind. He has Stargardt’s disease, a degenerative disease of the retina.

“I used to go see him (play ball) and ask him where he was. He couldn’t see the ball until it was five yards away.

“People always ask, ‘Will he become a footballer? and then I stood on the side of the field and heard, “He’s not as good as his dad.”

“As much as every father wants their son to play, that’s almost a relief to me.”

Meanwhile, his wife Louise, a keen driver like Gemma, was in a terrible accident a year after the birth of her daughter, breaking her back, hip and pelvis and requiring a long hospital stay.
