Mikel Arteta looks back on Tottenham fight

In one of the most competitive battles in Premier League history, the race for the top four could be over on Thursday should Arsenal defeat Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby.

After Manchester United’s terrible form last season, it was up to Arsenal and Tottenham to decide who would finish last in the top four this season and anything but a win for Spurs would see them squander their chances gamble finishing over the Gunners.

Former Liverpool, Manchester United and Newcastle United striker Michael Owen has given his verdict ahead of Thursday’s delicious clash as Arsenal look to secure fourth place.

Ahead of that game, Arsenal have built a four-point lead over Tottenham after a 2-1 win over Leeds United on Sunday with three games to go and another win here would confirm their place in the Champions League for next season. Spurs secured a good point in Liverpool in Saturday’s 1-1 draw and Owen predicts the same result here.

Speak with Bet Victor , he said: “I’ve been looking forward to this one for weeks. Spurs may have dropped points over the weekend but it was an impressive draw at Anfield. You can see what Conte is building and they are not far from being a very good team.

“It wasn’t a classic performance for Arsenal but beating Leeds was crucial to extend their lead over Spurs. Nketiah was under goals again, he looks like a natural finisher. A draw here would also be a good result for Arsenal. I think we’ll see. I tend towards 1:1.”

The Gunners had lost three games in a row in April to fall three points behind Tottenham at one stage, but have since won their next four to rise above their biggest rivals again, including victories over Chelsea, Man Utd and West Ham United.

As a result, Mikel Arteta’s side are now four points clear of Spurs going into the final three games of the season and a win over their rivals would make them mathematically impossible to drop out of the top four before the end of the season. Due to Chelsea’s poor form lately, the Gunners could even end up in third place.

As Owen said, a draw wouldn’t be the worst result in the world for Arsenal and it would still effectively secure them a place in the top four, but they would need to beat Newcastle on Sunday to be safe. However, a loss to Spurs could see it going to the final day of the season.

Spurs know that anything short of a Thursday night win will all but end their chances of a top-four finish this season. A loss would completely shatter those hopes, while a draw will keep them alive for at least another week despite having the more favorable of the last two games.

Antonio Conte has made an impressive turnaround since taking charge in November and his side showed just how far they’ve come with their performance in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool. As good as the point was, that tie put them even further behind the Gunners.

Everything was going so well for Spurs before losing to Brighton & Hove Albion and then drawing with Brentford, allowing Arsenal to put them in the top four but with the deadly front three from Dejan Kulusevski, Harry Kane and Son Heung-min They have every chance with their team to get all three points here in front of their own fans.
