Taoiseach Micheál Martin will leave the United States tonight and attend the European Council meeting in Brussels tomorrow.
r Martin’s attendance at the meeting was in doubt as it was confirmed last week that he had contracted Covid-19.
The Taoiseach has been isolating in Washington DC since testing positive for the virus during the state visit to the White House to mark St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.
However, in a statement released tonight, a government spokesman said Mr Martin has since received two negative Covid-19 test results and will attend tomorrow’s “important” EU meeting.
“The Taoiseach will attend a key European Council meeting in Brussels tomorrow, which will discuss Russian military aggression against Ukraine, security and defense, energy, economic issues, Covid-19 and external relations,” the spokesman said.
“He has now received two consecutive negative Covid tests prior to his departure from the US and will be flying home from Washington DC tonight.”
It comes as Mr Martin’s seven-day isolation period ended today.
The Taoiseach was forced to scrap plans to meet US President Joe Biden in person after testing positive for the virus ahead of St Patrick’s Day celebrations.
President Biden is to attend the EU summit.
