Michelle Heaton has said her doting husband “forgave” her battle with alcohol and drug addiction as she gushed over him on her one-year sobriety anniversary.

The 42-year-old Liberty X star flew to Mexico earlier this month with her husband, a personal trainer, instructor, Hugh Hanley, and their two children to celebrate her milestone.

And on her return, Michelle emotionally detailed how her husband helped her get her life back.

Speaking to Closer magazine, Michelle said: “I’m being absolutely honest with Hugh now and he feels like he has his wife back.

“He forgave me and we’re best friends again…as well as best friends in the bedroom!” she quipped.

The mum checked into The Priory rehab clinic in May last year after celebrity friends, including Katie Price, staged an intervention and paid for her to be treated for her five-year drinking problem.

Michelle’s drinking got significantly worse in lockdown 2020 and her problems spiraled out of control.

“I’ve always had an addictive personality — I’ve obsessed over my weight and used cocaine in the past, but nothing has brought me down like alcohol,” Michelle admitted.

“It was so much easier to mask up during lockdown because so many people were drinking at home in isolation. I keep refilling my glass, one vodka bottle at a time.”

Four days before entering the Priory rehabilitation facility, Michelle was frighteningly close to death.

Husband Hugh found her in bed having a seizure and Michelle said she was told she would have been dead within days if she hadn’t gotten help when she did.

Detailing the moment, he recounted OK! magazine last year: “Four days before she went to the Priory, she also had a very bad seizure in bed at 2am. She wouldn’t stop shaking and her mouth was drooling. That was scary and it really scared her.”

He added: “Her skin was also changing color and she hadn’t eaten in days. Things had gotten so bad that there was no way out. She was told in September 2020 that the way she was with her liver she would die if she didn’t do something about it.”

Reflecting on her breaking point, Michelle told Closer: “I had given up on my life and I didn’t care if I lost my family or friends, it just mattered where my next drink came from.

“My skin was grey, I was exhausted and my body was completely unrecognizable and bloated.

She spent four weeks at the specialized treatment center where she finally overcame her alcohol and cocaine addictions.

Suffering from the long term effects of binge drinking and cocaine, Michelle will now need medication for the rest of her life after damaging her pancreas.

The star is now on the road to recovery and as she was released from rehab, she posted a picture of herself being reunited with husband Hugh and two children.

Michelle admitted to Closer that her worst memories of her addiction lied to her husband and children, Faith, 10, and AJ, 8.

She choked back tears as she explained to the publication how she would throw up in the bathroom and then lie to the kids, saying she had a bad headache.

“I am so ashamed and so sad to think about how I lied to Hugh – I would wait until he went to bed to drink vodka in the middle of the night.”

But the sober Michelle is no longer hiding what happened from her kids, admitting, “I’ve spoken to my kids about what happened because I’m really proud of myself for changing my life.”
