Controversial MEP Mick Wallace has slammed the Ukrainian president for appearing on the digital cover of Vogue magazine.
The reaction to the cover story of Volodymyr Zelensky and his wife Olena Zelenska has drawn mixed reactions, with some calling it a “beautiful” and “powerful image,” while others criticized the couple for posing for a magazine while the country was at war is.
The couple spoke in a personal interview with Vogue in Kyiv.
Mr Wallace, an MEP, shared the cover photo on Twitter, accusing President Zelensky of “sending the less privileged to war” to “support the US and NATO agenda”.
He wrote: “There are reports of Ukraine losing 1,000 soldiers a day, but Zelinsky seems secure as he sends the less privileged to war to support the US-NATO agenda while maintaining an inept and compromised one.” EU to US tune dances the cost of its citizens with self-destructive sanctions…”
Mr Wallace did not cite a source for the claim that Ukraine is losing 1,000 soldiers a day.
In 2017, Mr. Wallace was banned from investing in companies for six years after he admitted he had knowingly tampered with his company’s sales tax returns.
Construction company MJ Wallace was underreported 1.4 million euros in VAT to revenue between 2008 and 2010, which was “intentional and systemic” and amounted to “fraud on revenue”, a judge said.
Ms. Zelenska is Vogue’s latest digital cover star as she sits in the President’s office in black pants and a white top.
She is also pictured holding her hand to her chest while surrounded by rubble and soldiers.
“These were the most horrible months of my life and the life of all Ukrainians,” she told the publication
“We are looking forward to the win. We have no doubt that we will prevail. And that keeps us going.”
In the wide-ranging interview, the First Lady of Ukraine said she was initially upset when her husband decided to run for the presidency.
“I respected his decision and understood that this was an important step for him,” she said.
“At the same time, I felt like my life and the life of my family was about to change quite radically.
“The change would be long-lasting and quite complex.
The Ukrainian President said his wife is “really my best friend”.
He added: “She is also a patriot and she loves Ukraine deeply. It’s true. And she is an excellent mother.”
