Mickey Rourke went too far with his Con Air audition

“Con Air” came at the height of ’90s action glory, bringing us big, loud, testosterone-fueled blockbusters like “True Lies,” “Bad Boys,” ” and “Armageddon” and two films starring Nicolas Cage transform from the serious Oscar-winning actor of “Leaving Las Vegas” into action hero. The first was “The Rock,” where he had great chemistry with Sean Connery, before he really blew up to play Cameron Poe in “Con Air.” Poe is a convict just trying to get home to his family on a jet plane rife with bad guys who inconveniently hijacked the plane.

“Con Air” is ridiculously fun and provides us with an excellent cast of crooks including Steve Buscemi, Ving Rhames, and Danny Trejo. The final pick was Cyrus “The Virus” Grissom, a criminal mastermind masterminding the takeover of the plane. Bruce Willis turned it down, and Tom Sizemore and Willem Dafoe both read for the role. Then there’s Mickey Rourke, who took things too far. Director Simon West recalls (via Empire):

“Mickey Rourke was a particularly tough audition. He was doing a confrontation scene and there was this young assistant casting director reading Poe across from him. Mickey Rourke was closing his eyes. , the nose faces him, and then pulls out 10- A Bowie knife from behind him, absolutely real and extremely sharp. And he holds it under this poor guy’s chin. me and the casting directors stood still – we intervened, we threw him to the ground? Was this a great performance, or did he lose the plot and kill us all? I’m ugly ashamed to say we didn’t interfere. We let him finish the scene. So it was a pretty strong audition.”
